Kumagai

Founded in 1935, the Kumagai company specializes in traditional Kyoto pottery known as Kyoyaki-Kiyomizuyaki, a celebrated form of Japanese earthenware. Pottery in Kyoto dates back to the late 5th century, while the Kyo Yaki style flourished in the 16th century as Kyoto became a center of trade and politics. The popularity of the tea ceremony created strong demand for earthenware tea sets, drawing skilled artisans from across Japan to the capital. As a result, Kyo Yaki developed by incorporating diverse forms and techniques from different regions, creating a rich and distinctive ceramic tradition.
