Design by: Antoni de Moragas Gallissà
Design year: 1957
Antoni de Moragas Gallissà was born in Barcelona, where he studied and worked as an architect during a period when Spain lagged behind other Western countries. In 1949, he founded Club 49, a group aiming to connect with European and American avant-garde movements. By 1957, Moragas helped institutionalize Club 49 as Grupo R and promoted architectural reform and industrial design in Barcelona. He was a founding member and the first president of ADI-FAD, Spain’s Association of Industrial Design, established in 1960. His design work, influenced by Nordic functionality and Alvar Aalto, includes iconic pieces like the Moragas table lamp and armchair. Moragas embraced Rationalism with a personal touch, and his furniture is now considered classic, industrially produced but originally handcrafted.
